The first method to filling a clinic is as simple as making some phone calls. If you are looking for 8 participants a day, call friends you think would be interested. Generally more than half of the clinic can be filled this way. However, some advertising and promotion will go a long way toward filling the remaining slots, and bringing in auditors. I have written a short bio, geared specifically towards clinics, that you may use for promotion.
First and foremost, get the clinic listed in the calendar of events with the various carriage driving and horse publications nationally, and in your area. These listings are generally free of charge, and generate the most interest. List the clinic in as many calendars as you can, since seeing the listing once may not be enough to get a participant or auditor to take notice. Listing in the national publications gives the event a wider reach, and greater credibility. Don’t forget to get the clinic listed in the local driving, trail, and breed club newsletters. Make sure you include your contact info with phone and e-mail.
Many local horse and news papers are happy to print articles about upcoming events. Call the editor of these publications and have a well written short article ready to go. I am happy to provide a short article for this purpose. Once again, remember your local driving, trail, and breed club newsletters. The editors of these newsletters are usually only too happy for someone else to help them fill their pages with interesting and useful content. If you plan to host this clinic regularly, a follow-up article after the clinic gives you a head start on the next date.
Put up a 1 page flyer, with tear away contact information at all of the area feed and tack stores. This gets to those who don’t really pick up any of those papers or magazines, but are interested in learning. If you make this flyer, foldable for mailing you can mail it to membership lists from national and local driving organizations. We are happy to provide contacts in your area of people whom may have expressed an interest in attending a clinic with me. Here is a sample flyer created by one of my clinic hosts.
Display advertising can go a long way toward filling your event. Any of the national carriage driving publications as well as your local horse papers accept display advertising. If you need pictures for this effort, please contact me.
All of these publications run “calendar of events” pages. Often they are very happy to list clinics free of charge. These publications also sell classified and display advertising.
